From Avoiding Running to Loving 5K: How You Can Do It Too

training & performance

If you told me a few years ago that I’d be running 5km for fun, I probably would have laughed. I used to avoid running at all costs, reluctantly partaking in pre-season runs for Football. But here’s the thing… we all start somewhere.

The idea of running 5km straight might seem daunting, but it’s not about speed or being the best. It’s about showing up, being consistent, and just taking it one step at a time. Whether you’re a total beginner or someone looking to fall back in love with running, here are some simple yet effective tips that might help you get started.

Start Small & Stay Consistent

You don’t need to run 5km right away. In fact, you shouldn’t! Start with short bursts of running mixed with walking. Even just 30 seconds of running followed by a minute of walking is a great way to ease in. The key? Well that is consistency. Small, regular efforts will build into big progress.

Build It Up Gradually

Over time, running a little further and a little longer will start to feel easier. As your body adapts, your stamina improves, and suddenly, what once felt impossible starts to feel achievable. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Reddy to Run: Your Stepping Stone to 5K

Our 3km loop at Reddy to Run is the perfect stepping stone for anyone working their way up to 5km, whether you walk, jog or do 30 seconds on and off. It’s a safe, supportive space where you can build confidence, fitness, and community. Running doesn’t have to be a solo journey - having a group of like-minded people to support you can make all the difference.

Running Is More Than Just Exercise

The biggest surprise for me? The social side of running. It has introduced me to so many incredible people, all on their own journeys but supporting each other every step of the way. Running isn’t just about movement, it’s about connection, shared experiences, and feeling part of something bigger.

A Clearer Mind, A Stronger You

One of the most unexpected benefits of running is how it clears my mind. Everything else going on in life just fades into the background. Running allows me to think clearly, and be present in the moment.

And of course, there’s the physical side. Running makes you feel good - not just physically, but mentally too. The post-run sense of accomplishment is truly unmatched.

So, Are You Reddy?

If you’ve been putting off running 5km because it seems too hard, trust me - you’re Reddy. You just have to start. One step, one run at a time. We’re here to support you every step of the way 💙🏃♂️
